IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (4/20/26) "Promoting Education Based Athletics in Indiana" How would you rate yourself when it comes to accepting coaching? Are you engaged with your coach when he/she calls you over to talk about a certain situation or play? Do you make eye contact or do you look away as if you are annoyed? I can't help but watch student-athletes when the situation arises. In most sports, it is very visible to the spectators (live or even on TV). You notice immediately if the coach/athlete interaction is positive or if it is not. At the high school level, these are truly learning situations. It is your chance to listen and learn-usually about a specific situation that is relevant at the time. It is your chance to show your coach that you are willing to take what they are telling you and put it to use. Your attitude in these situations leaves a lasting impression. If you give it an "I don't care" type of response, you immediately put a big question mark about your ability to be coached. Next time you receive instruction or comments, know that others will be watching. More people than you realize will witness the interaction. Handle it in a way that shows you are engaged and listening to what has been said! All content property of Billy Shepherd Sports
